Assessing numeracy and other mathematical skills in psychology students as a basis for learning statistics

The project aimed to extend Mulhern & Wylie’s (2004) findings to a wider sample of UK university psychology departments.

Specifically it sought to:

  1. undertake an assessment of numeracy and mathematical reasoning among students entering courses of study in a range of UK psychology departments;
  2. use the results of this assessment to identify students' conceptual difficulties in specific components of mathematical thinking;
  3. make available the findings of this research including the test materials to psychology departments throughout the UK.
