Creating a curriculum: embracing open learning in music

This pedagogic innovation embraces open learning and challenges traditional methods of teaching in music. Connecting practicing collaborative thinking and working across musical genres is built into the curriculum as these undergraduates study Instrumental/Vocal Teaching in Music. Students use open-access online content to explore a variety of topics about the components of music making and learning engage with creative and reflective activities and then share aspects of their work online to interact with the wider music community. A combination of face-to-face in class learning and online blogging tweeting posting and commenting using the class tag of #MUS654 all contribute to students’ learning as they prepare their assessed work: to create a bespoke curriculum for a private music student. Through the class students develop new methods resources and digital confidences which all contribute to the on-going development of their professional skills.
