Delivering Effective Health and Safety Teaching in an Undergraduate Programme

The Joint Board of Moderators inspected the civil engineering courses at Leeds Metropolitan University in November 2005. This visit highlighted the need to review the embedment of the teaching and learning of health and safety throughout the curriculum. This paper reviews the development of the delivery of health and safety material to diverse groups of students and explores access to and the appropriate use of the broad range of material available. It describes the development and use of a number of scenarios facilitated by industrial partners. The paper also examines the lecturer and student learning teaching and assessment experience. Student feedback suggested a need to continuously consolidate key aspects of health and safety. Staff however identified a need for further training and regular updates to reflect latest legislative requirements and industrial practice in order to successfully embed health and safety across the curriculum.
