One size does not fit all: using personalised audience response technology to support Pharmacology understanding in non-medical prescribing students

Audience response technology (ART) has been used to support learning for students in numerous disciplines and has consistently demonstrated increased student engagement with learning materials. ART in the classroom has however always been in the anonymous mode indeed this has been cited as one of the advantages of its use. This report describes the first use of ART in a individualised form to provide personalised formative feedback.

Each student is allocated a specific handset to be used in all ART sessions throughout the course. Feedback provided in class is identical to that seen in the anonymous mode thus allaying student concerns that their individual responses would be identifiable. This immediate feedback is then followed up by delayed personal feedback detailing the students individual responses. This individualised use of ART has been described by students as 'a double whammy of usefulness!'
