Towards a concept-based approach to Hospitality education

The innovative pedagogical approach presented here is based a model that Loykie has designed implemented tried and tested over the last ten years. It is inspired by the teaching practice called “concept-based teaching” – most commonly used in primary and secondary education in some international schools. Loykie’s model which is composed of three elements (concepts contents contexts) can be used for several pedagogical purposes in Higher Education such as curriculum design teaching and assessment.

This article focuses specifically on hospitality education (so all examples are from programmes such as Fda/BA/MA/MSc in Hotel Management) but all the ideas and principles are relevant for all subjects in the HEA Social Sciences cluster. A concept-based pedagogy can be applied to all subjects where students would benefit from “less content” in the curriculum but more challenging work to develop their conceptual understanding their critical thinking skills and their ability to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge.
