Pavla Boulton has taught education to a generation of Early Years practitioners in South East Wales. She started teaching in 1992 and, recognising her passion for enabling others, moved into HE to work with colleagues to create authentic, forward-looking, aspiration-raising and impactful education for developing professionals. Over the years Pavla has worked with learners across the university provision, undertaken a host of typical academic roles and, reflecting on the whole, has pioneered a pedagogic approach that, in essence, helps students believe in themselves as learners, educators and their legitimate contribution to their communities.

For the last eight years Pavla has been Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Early Years Education and Practice degree, a recent HE addition, aiming to develop a workforce to meet the specific needs (school and community) of early childhood. Alongside a team of seven academics, developing a step-change holistic curriculum that, with authenticity, empowerment, wellbeing and students-as-partners at its heart, is having transformational impact on learners, their employment successes and the children they go on to educate.

Pavla’s specialist interests, and current research areas, include outdoor play and learning pedagogies and the collision between the pedagogies of the outdoors and technology. There is still work to do, but the latter focus explores a more holistic and blended approach to teaching areas traditionally viewed as separate entities.

Pavla says she “has been fortunate to have my work, and the outputs of our graduates, recognised and implemented across Wales.” Her roles with external partners, including Natural Resources Wales, enable her to challenge, share and influence national thinking about both the Early Years curriculum and the workforce to empower that vision into practice. She thrives in these interactions, gathering new ideas to explore and channel into her teaching and ongoing learning journey.

Mae Pavla Boulton wedi bod yn dysgu addysg i'r genhedlaeth nesaf o ymarferwyr y Blynyddoedd Cynnar yn y de-ddwyrain. Dechreuodd ei gyrfa addysgu yn 1992 ac, wrth sylweddoli ei bod yn mwynhau galluogi eraill, symudodd ymlaen i faes addysg uwch i weithio gyda chydweithwyr i greu profiad dysgu sy'n ddilys, sy'n edrych i'r dyfodol, sy'n codi dyheadau ac sy'n cael effaith ar weithwyr proffesiynol wrth iddyn nhw ddatblygu. Dros y blynyddoedd, mae Pavla wedi gweithio gyda dysgwyr ar draws darpariaeth y Brifysgol, wedi ymgymryd â llu o rolau academaidd nodweddiadol ac, wrth fyfyrio ar y cyfan, wedi arloesi gyda dull addysgeg sydd, yn ei hanfod, yn helpu myfyrwyr i gredu ynddyn nhw eu hunain fel dysgwyr ac addysgwyr ac i gredu yn y cyfraniad maen nhw'n ei wneud yn eu cymunedau.

Dros yr wyth mlynedd diwethaf, mae Pavla wedi bod yn Arweinydd y Cwrs gradd BA (Anrh.) Addysg ac Ymarfer y Blynyddoedd Cynnar, sy'n ychwanegiad diweddar i addysg uwch, gyda'r nod o ddatblygu gweithlu i ddiwallu anghenion penodol yn y blynyddoedd cynnar (yr ysgol a'r gymuned). Ochr yn ochr â thîm o saith o academyddion, mae wedi datblygu cwricwlwm cyfannol sy'n creu newid sylweddol, ac sydd – drwy osod dilysrwydd, grymuso, lles a myfyrwyr-fel-partneriaid yn ganolog iddo – yn cael effaith drawsnewidiol ar ddysgwyr, ar eu llwyddiannau o ran cyflogaeth ac ar y plant maen nhw'n mynd ymlaen i'w haddysgu.

Mae diddordebau arbenigol Pavla, a'i meysydd ymchwil cyfredol, yn cynnwys addysgeg chwarae a dysgu yn yr awyr agored a'r gwrthdrawiad rhwng addysgeg yr awyr agored a thechnoleg. Mae gwaith i'w wneud o hyd, ond mae'r ail faes yn edrych ar ddull mwy cyfannol a chyfunol o ymdrin â meysydd addysgu sy'n cael eu hystyried yn endidau ar wahân yn draddodiadol.

Meddai Pavla: "Dw i wedi bod yn ffodus bod fy ngwaith, ac allbynnau ein graddedigion, wedi cael cydnabyddiaeth ac yn cael eu defnyddio ledled Cymru." Mae ei rolau gyda phartneriaid allanol, gan gynnwys Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru, yn ei galluogi i herio, i rannu ac i ddylanwadu ar syniadaeth genedlaethol am gwricwlwm y Blynyddoedd Cynnar a'r gweithlu er mwyn galluogi'r weledigaeth honno i ddod yn un ymarferol. Mae hi'n ffynnu ar y math yma o ryngweithio, gan gasglu syniadau newydd i'w harchwilio a'u cynnwys yn ei haddysgu ac yn ei thaith barhaus o ddysgu.
