Benefits of using Industrially based Group Projects within Mathematics Programmes

A key component of the specialist programmes which comprise the University of Derby’s UG Mathematics Scheme is a module entitled the Mathematics Group Project. This module provides a practical learning experience to students which complements and integrates skills and knowledge gained through study on more traditional ‘content focussed’ modules. The focus of the module is that students work in small teams on a problem proposed and presented by industrialists. Students liaise with the industrialists and report back on progress both formally and informally culminating in the final deliverables of a technical report and formal oral presentation.
