Catching up with the Science of Compassion in HE Group Work - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

Compassion is the noticing of others’ distress and a commitment to reduce that distress.  This workshop will show how current research on compassion - from neuroscience group psychotherapy and ethnography - has led to a deeper understanding of hundreds of student accounts of what spoils their group work.  Attendees will be invited to try out resulting practical strategies found to be effective at dismantling behaviours including:   not contributing to discussion; monopolising/over talking/ taking over ‘leadership’ of the group and others too. They will have a chance to discuss implications of this for (even) more than a front-line engagement with TEF.
