    This report identifies LLN strategies that support apprentice progression to higher education. It captures effective practice that LNNs and others can learn from and build on. It also contains some clear messages for a wider range of stakeholders including those with a policy remit.

The research explored the career intentions and career development of these students and forms part of a larger longitudinal study that will track the students over a number of years.

    In order to learn from Fd developments in Construction Management (CM) four case studies of Fd developments nearing completion in mid 2008 were examined in a workshop sponsored by fdf and CEBE at Salford University on 12th June 2008. These reports are informed by the material presented at the workshop separate detailed research reports generated in each of the projects final programme specifications and detailed discussions with project leaders.

  • Foundation degrees - Barriers and Opportunities in the Professional Bodies Sector

    PARN (the Professional Associations Research Network) was commissioned by fdf to carry out research that identifies how Foundation degrees fit in with routes to qualification in the professions. The research also examines opportunities for facilitating partnerships between professional bodies and providers of Foundation degrees as well as identifying barriers preventing such collaboration.
  • Guidance for the assessment of work-based learning in Foundation degrees

    fdf commissioned the Student Assessment and Classification Working Group (SACWG) to produce a guide to the assessment of work-based learning in Foundation degrees. A guide consisting of 18 principles supportive of good practice in the assessment of work-based learning and examples of innovation practice offered by providers was published in August 2010. A literaure review carried out as part of this research has also been published.

    This is the summary report of a study carried out on behalf of fdf from May2007 to April 2008. The purpose was to provide evidence based on the experiences of disabled students education providers and employers to enhance fdf's information advice and guidance service in order to widen participation to Foundation degrees for disabled people.

    In 2008 fdf commissioned Mantz Yorke and Bernard Longden to undertake research that examined the experiences of part-time Foundation degree students. This report presents the outcomes of a survey of 474 students who were engaged on part-time Foundation degree programmes in 31 institutions.

    The Institue of Education published the findings of their research project 'Putting Knowledge to Work' in 2009. The research challenges conventional notions of academic knowledge as context-free and it demonstrates that there are complex processes of 're-contextualising' knowledge through the design and implementation of work-based learning at higher education levels. This short guide has been produced to encourage curriculum development teams to draw upon the research and think through carefully and in depth the purpose and processes involved in work-based learning.

The review provides an up-to-date compilation of a substantial amount of material on Foundation degrees.
