Shifting academic careers and their implications for enhancing professionalism in teaching and supporting learning

To be launched on 2 October with a keynote by the report’s author William Locke (Reader in Higher Education Studies at the Institute of Education University of London and previously Head of Learning and Teaching policy at HEFCE 2010-2013) this research provides a review of the literature focusing on the changing nature of academic careers in the higher education sector including any shift towards ‘teaching only’ contracts. It also identifies key issues in terms of teaching and learning continuing professional development and reward and recognition arising from this development.

Gaining an understanding of the way that academic careers are shifting is important in terms of understanding how different groups of staff need to be supported in their professional development. As the national body for learning and teaching in HE the HEA supports staff who teach at all stages of their careers.
