Health care professionals are constantly working with issues of loss whether the people they care for are experiencing difficulties with emotional or physical health loss of mobility or memory or facing ultimate loss at the end of life. Health care students must therefore be educated to understand how to practise effectively with people who are experiencing loss and to learn strategies not only to help their patients to cope with physical and psychosocial transitions but also to manage their own feelings and emotions which this work may evoke.
Having recently taught mixed audiences of health and social care students in the Faculty of Health and the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Ljubljana Slovenia I can attest that these concepts transcend all boundaries and are relevant both interprofessionally and internationally.
