Anthony’s career has focused on enabling students and educationalists to access and harness the benefits of internationalisation, through his teaching in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), advancement of educational internationalisation and influence on the cross-sector experience for international students.

Initially Anthony developed his skills for the international classroom through teaching in French, Chinese and Japanese Universities. In 2002 he was appointed Course Tutor (EAP/ Academic Skills) at the University of Reading, where he developed expertise in programme design, assessment and student experience. He worked his way up to the role of Assistant Director at Reading’s International Study and Language Institute. In 2010 Anthony became founding Director of the Centre for English and World Languages at the University of Kent. He established new teaching teams in EAP, World Languages and inter-disciplinary international pathways programmes. Anthony proactively led on new high-quality curricula for both international and home students. 

Throughout his career, Anthony has served as External Examiner and Academic Adviser nationally and internationally to 10 UK and transnational universities, impacting the assessment of more than 12,000 students. He has continued to publish educational materials in academic literacy and assessment to support students’ experience of assessment in the international sector. 

In 2015, Anthony was appointed Kent’s Dean for internationalisation, a strategic role involving the advancement of educational internationalisation and overseeing the needs of international students, institution-wide. Anthony continues to teach at Kent; Undergraduate and Postgraduate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), designing and teaching the Global Officers Leadership Development Programme and curriculum internationalisation on the Postgraduate Certificate for Higher Education (PGCHE) for new academics. Internationally, he runs an international educational events series, leads educational partnerships with international universities and gives staff training sessions and conference presentations in curriculum development. He also actively influences cross-sector experience for international students through his role with the UK Council for International Affairs (UKCISA) on the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) Council, as Deputy Chair of the British Accreditation Council’s Accreditation Committee and as founding Chair of the University Pathways Alliance.
