Dr Melanie Rogers is a University Teaching Fellow at the University of Huddersfield specialising in two diverse but interconnected fields; Advanced Practice and Spiritualty. She also works clinically as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care which enables her to draw on her clinical practice to help students assimilate theory to practice. She is passionate about supporting students to become Advanced Practitioners who work autonomously in roles previously undertaken by Medical Practitioners. She inspires them to excel clinically and ensure that the care they provide is holistic and person-centred. She is an innovative educator who utilises creative and experiential approaches to engage students with the complexities of Advanced Practitioner roles. She has transformed the learning experiences of her students through innovative approaches to education.
Dr Rogers is renowned nationally and internationally and has held high-profile leadership roles which have influenced the direction of advanced practice in the UK and globally. She is Chair of the International Council of Nurses Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse Network (ICN NP/APNN) which supports the development and advancement of advanced practitioners globally. She is also the Director of the ICN NP/APNN Global Academy of Research and Enterprise.
The advanced practice focuses on four pillars of practice; clinical practice, education, research, and leadership. Her journey has been unique, facilitating healthcare spirituality whilst traversing the four pillars to influence pedagogical theories applied to advanced practice. Spirituality reflects learner-centered and transformational education, focusing on the student holistically, considering what gives them hope, meaning, and purpose, recognising their unique, and personal, journey. Integrating this into her teaching and learning has inspired and engaged students to provide the highest standards of care and to excel in their professions, whilst understanding, valuing, and respecting others. She was awarded the Queen’s Nurse title for her commitment to the highest standards of practice through educational innovation and excellence.
