Dr Sarah Scott

Dr Sarah Scott is Associate Professor in the School of Archaeology and Ancient History, University of Leicester. She received a University 'Distinguished Teaching Fellowship' in recognition of teaching excellence in July 2013 and became a Senior Fellow of the HEA in 2015. Sarah has demonstrated a sustained commitment to innovative teaching from the earliest stages of her career. She has done so most recently through leading the design, development and promotion of a number of nationally recognised initiatives which embed employability within and alongside the curriculum, while simultaneously promoting Widening Participation and sustainable student-staff enterprise. Impact of work Sarah's embedding of HEAR accredited volunteering, employability, sustainable enterprise and public engagement from Year 1 to postgraduate level, and the opportunity for students to take on paid supervisory and management roles, has made the School of Archaeology and Ancient History unique within the University and amongst UK departments of Archaeology and Ancient History. More than 70 students from across the University have engaged with Archaeology and Classics in the Community since 2013 working with more than 50 local and national organisations and charities. Plans for the future Through the continued development of procedures for the costing and evaluation of activities, applying for external funding, and the development of a training and mentoring programme for supervisors and students, Sarah plans to ensure that these initiatives are sustainable long term. This will further establish the University of Leicester as a hub for the teaching of Classics and Archaeology in the Midlands. It will also help to ensure the continued expansion of exciting opportunities for student volunteering and employment within and alongside our degree programmes, while simultaneously allowing the University to invest in a greater range of Widening Participation initiatives.
