From data, it is clear that each year the BAME student population is growing and mirrors the local population. In the last five years the institution has increased widening participation and community engagement work – focusing on local schools and  colleges, where there are large representations of BAME students. Consequently, BAME students have reported that a key reason for choosing the institution is that they see themselves reflected in their work and on their campus. Applicants from BAME students have increased each year. In 2016/17, the institution had more BAME than white undergraduates for the first time. Notably, the Black student population grew by 47%, while the number of white students fell significantly by 6.7%.
