Female staff members are encouraged to participate in the female mentoring programme organised by the Queen’s Gender Initiative. Since 2009 all of the women at Lecturer level who applied for promotion were promoted. Among Senior Lecturers there was a 67% success rate for women and 50% for men. More women applied for promotion than men, and women were more successful than men at all levels. While in 2007/8 women occupied only 11% of senior level academic administrative roles, this has risen to over 50%. This improvement is a result of implementing SWAN action plans and a proactive culture of encouragement within the School.
