‘Teaching Excellence Framework’ – But whose understanding of ‘excellence’? Research into and reflection upon views among students and academics of what makes for ‘excellent teaching’ - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

We will discuss our research – which explores understandings of teaching excellence among academics and students – and reflect upon the concept of ‘teaching excellence’. We are surveying and interviewing students and academics using four categories: 1) what academics think excellent teaching involves; 2) what academics believe students think excellent teaching involves; 3) what students think excellent teaching involves; and 4) what students believe academics think excellent teaching involves. The survey is based on our university’s ‘Student Evaluation of Teaching’ and the NSS to assess the relative value placed on those aspects of our teaching which we regularly ask students to evaluate.
