A paper from the 2013 STEM Annual Conference.
Health and Safety learning forms a vital part of BEng Civil Engineering programmes however first year students do not necessarily have the knowledge to understand this and consequently may not consider it to be a necessary part of their degree programme.
This paper presents a study which was initiated by the lead researcher in response to a practical problem that emerged within this context over two years; civil engineering students were disengaged with health and safety as a topic area and could not appreciate its relevance to their wider programme of study or indeed future profession.
