Developing socio-emotional intelligence in higher education Academics - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

This presentation aims to highlight the importance for academics in developing their socio-emotional intelligence (SEI). It presents qualitative research findings where students explored how to develop their SEI whilst at university concluding that academics that understand model and employ SEI strategies make a difference to the students SEI. It examines SEI within HE and identifies the main characteristic of a socio-emotional academic setting out strategies to both develop and apply it within practice. Lastly it identifies clear advantages of being socio-emotional intelligent regarding teaching quality student experience and the TEF whilst emphasising its positive impact on improving personal wellbeing.
