Equality in higher education: statistical report 2020

Our thirteenth national staff equality data report for higher education institutions (HEIs) aims to assist the sector in better understanding the main equality challenges for staff and students, directing future efforts to overcome them.

This report presents a snapshot of the age, disability, ethnicity, gender, and religion and belief of students in higher education (HE) for the 2018/19 academic year, as well as on the interplay of these identities (for example, female Black students and male disabled students). In addition, our report presents high-level and experimental data related to gender identity, sexual orientation and social background.

New to this year's report is the experimental data section which includes social background data for students. This is the first time that social background data has been included in the Advance HE statistical reports. Socio-economic status is not listed as a protected characteristic in the 2010 Equality Act. However, the Equality Act makes explicit reference to the duty of authorities to take regard of inequalities of outcome that result from socio-economic disadvantage.
