Facilitating learner autonomy : a student-led design project : Engineering Subject Centre Teaching Awards

The case study concerns the use of an open-ended project in which students design and test a miniature wind-turbine in teaching a 20-credit design and manufacturing module. The module is taken by about 90 students in their second year of studying for a BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering. The students are mostly from the UK and came to university straight from school with A-level qualifications; they have little previous experience of open-ended project work though they did do a much smaller project in their first year.
