Aston launched their Chartered Management Degree by Apprenticeship in March 2016 with just 10 student apprentices. In September they were joined by a further 6 apprentices in total representing several employers. For the teaching staff who tutor and guide the learning it rapidly became apparent that teaching apprentices requires a radically different approach to ‘traditional’ face-to-face or even distance learning methods if both student and employers’ needs and expectations are to be met. We consider our experience an action learning project leading us to redefine the very underpinning philosophy of HE teaching for apprenticeships. This presentation shares our experiences.
