Guidelines for Links With Local Muslim Communities

This presentation is part of the HEA Islamic Studies Network funded 'Guidelines for the study of a local Muslim community' project carried out at the University of Wolverhampton. This presentation details the benefits and potential pitfalls of field trips for theology and Law students. The presentation also outlines a framework of best practice in preparing for and carrying out a field trip into the local Muslim community.

First hand contact with members of religious communities can be difficult and challenging. This project aims to facilitate the process of contact interviewing and presenting materials from a local community. Three mosques from Wolverhampton will provide some insight into the diversity of Muslim beliefs (Sunni and Shi'a) as well as within Sunni (Barelwi and Deobandi). The project will set out a framework from first contact to a consideration of appropriate questions for exploration in line with cultural and religious sensibilities. Supporting the encounter will be a range of electronic materials available in text image audio and video (where possible) as well as a text and audio glossary.
