A case study demontrating the impact of the HEA's Teaching Development Grant programme.
Most modern language degrees include a year of work or study abroad at a partner university or with an overseas employer. Evidence indicates such placements are valued by students and employers alike. However by focusing on linguistix competence there is a risk of overlooking the broader benefits of a placement in enhancing employment prospects.
With departmental grant funding the University of Southampton's School of Languages Linguistics and Area Studies embarked on a 15-month project to develop a framework and practical strategies to engage students in before during and after their experience to fully realise the employability potential of a placement year.
