From learning by transmission to learning by doing: engaging students in research-led teaching and learning practices

This report argues for the importance of providing students with engaged and real-world learning that takes place in non-traditional settings that are often based outside of the classroom. For this to happen students need to engage in a process of discovery and exploration that is part of a programme of engagement by Faculty and students with policy-makers and the public at large to reinvigorate the relevance of academic disciplines. The examples that follow include the creation of real world learning environments such as simulation and study abroad opportunities the use of research-led placements and the creation of a policy commission. More broadly however the report calls for a fundamental rethinking as to the importance and relevancy of higher education to address the challenge of public engagement.
