NET 2018 Conference: Using narrative as a teaching tool to explore the physical health needs of people with mental illness

Innovation paper

Mental Health nursing students who encounter clients with intractable physical health problems report they have insufficient knowledge to respond to this aspect of patient need. Prompting students to recount practice experience contributed to developing context centred scenarios that were used in a module focused on teaching physical health for people with mental health problems. The scenarios helped the students develop empathy and consider the patient perspective in a transformed way.
