Operational research ambassadors in schools

A presentation from the STEM Annual Conference 2014.

A pilot scheme funded by the Operational Research Society enabled five undergraduate Mathematics students to work in Greenwich and Cardiff schools for up to six weeks during the summer term of 2013. These student ambassadors were given the task of creating learning materials on topics within Operational Research and then trialling them with GCSE and A-Level students. These materials form part of a repository of resources available on the LearnAboutOR website for teachers to use with groups of similarly aged pupils or adapt to enhance the teaching of Decision Mathematics or as stand-alone enrichment lessons. The success of this project has formed the basis for a new initiative to get more OR Ambassadors into schools and thus contribute to promoting the importance of Mathematics.
