Overcoming obstacles: Delivering inspirational teaching and learning in prisons - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

Delivering a programme of higher education within maximum security prison facilities characterised by chronic overcrowding poor nutrition harsh conditions and few resources is a challenge. The aim of the session is to demonstrate the methods African Prisons Project(APP) has developed to rise to this challenge transcending the constraints of the environment by adopting an approach that engages the entire prison population creating meaningful relevant teaching that inspires and empower students. APP’s creative teaching and learning techniques utilise local resources to maximise teaching and empower highly marginalised populations to work cooperatively in the pursuit of excellence and towards justice rehabilitation and ultimately transformation.
