Portal pedagogy: an experiment in internationalisation without travel

This case study describes an experiment in real-time teaching between two universities 10 000 miles apart. My colleagues and I from Monash and Warwick respectively wanted to discover if we could reproduce the conditions of a real teaching space using technology. We wanted however the technology to serve our commitment to embodied learning: we did not want to compromise on more 'brainbound' methods that might be produced by a mini-MOOC for example. We intended that our students be full participants co-creators of knowledge. With these aspirations in mind we designed in both countries 'international portals' complete with up-to-date teleconferencing facilities. We opted to teach an honours-level module on 'identity' as we hoped that the experience of the portal would reflect this complex and multidisciplinary idea. We wanted to collaborate with our students and colleagues to produce a rich cultural experience. The study details our successes and failures.
