STEM Careers for All? Diversity In Engineering

A presentation by Nike Folayan keynote speaker at the STEM Annual Conference 2014.

Under the overarching theme of 'STEM careers for all?' Nike will present this from a diversity and inclusion perspective.

STEM careers make a significant contribution to UK’s economic growth. In the current economic climate the success of any sector will rely on its ability to attract the right person to the right role. It is therefore imperative that the industry can recruit from the widest possible pool of applicants.

Nike will explore what diversity and inclusion means for the engineering industry drawing lessons from the "Make Engineering Hot" programme which reaches out to BME communities in the UK. The implicit and explicit barriers to entrants from diverse groups can face in recruitment retention and progression will be discussed. Successful practices and the changing image of the engineering profession will be used to describe effective ways of promoting STEM careers at all levels.
