Taste and talk: More than beetroot brownies and carrot marmalade: What community historians can teach academics about student engagement - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

This interactive session will provide an opportunity to explore some of the approaches to learning used by Community Historians who through WWI Bake- Offs and tasting beetroot brownies or carrot marmalade and baking eggless sponge cakes frequently use food as a way of engaging the public in social history. Samples will be provided! It aims to explore and stimulate discussion about what community historians can teach academics about both stimulating learning and providing an excellent learning experience for students. This  may be as much about feelings creating a comfortable atmosphere in the classroom and informal dialogue as the formal curriculum.
