Unmet Expectations: Experiences of Clinical Practice from International Nursing Students

The case story on this page has been developed as part of the Teaching International Students project.

Diana De from the University of Glamorgan discusses a qualitative study to establish whether international nursing students were facing disadvantages when caring for patients in the UK.

The main objectives were to consider whether unfair discriminatory behavior could be linked to ethnicity and to determine whether negative behaviour by patients would have any impact on their carer’s self-esteem clinical practice or the quality of care that was being delivered. Since this study was completed additional support mechanisms have been incorporated for future ONP cohorts and more frequent link visits (when a nurse lecturer goes out to the student’s clinical area) are undertaken.
