Work-Based Learning: Illuminating the Higher Education Landscape

This report summarises the current 'state of play' of work-based learning in higher education (HE). The thinking presented in this report is predominantly based on the findings of a study conducted by the Higher Education Academy (hereafter referred to as the 'Academy') into work-based learning. It clearly demonstrates that higher education institutions (HEIs) are providing work-based learning solutions but that perceptions of work-based learning show that it is still seen by some as belonging to more vocationally oriented institutions. It identifies successful pedagogical approaches but highlights the fact the baselines are difficult to establish as the data do not reflect the true extent and breadth of the activity. It identifies a number of issues which need to be addressed to allow for the expansion of WBL including defining terminology and an effective credit-based system of accreditation and increasing understanding of related issues such as pedagogy and employer demand. It makes recommendations to overcome these issues including research to be undertaken and areas needing resourcing and testing and also referring to improving employee motivation and employer engagement.
