Richard is a lawyer and legal anthropologist. A specialist in South Asia and the Himalayas, he taught on the anthropology of colonialism at the University of Edinburgh. His current research is on human rights and migration. He teaches on immigration and asylum law. In December 2020, he was appointed to represent the Law Society of Scotland on the Scottish Government Working Reference Group on implementing the convention to eradicate all forms of racial discrimination. He lead a project with ethnic minority law students to examine the challenges they experience to inform changes required to make the study of law inclusive.
