Dr Jack Aitken

Dr Jack Aitken has held positions at the University of Glasgow for over 20 years. He has been Director of Academic Services there for four years, with responsibility for academic policy and governance, academic and student learning development and administration and for managing delivery of the Learning and Teaching Strategy. He has extensive experience of team building and reorganisation. He previously held appointments at post-92 universities.

Jack has expertise and a keen interest in academic governance and has led major reform programmes in this at Glasgow. He previously created the model for faculty governance adopted at Glasgow Caledonian University.  He is a member of the Academic Board at The Glasgow School of Art and has worked on a number of institutional mergers in various capacities.  

Jack has 30 years' experience in academic quality and its development - overseeing management of four institutional reviews at Glasgow. He was Chair of the Scottish Teaching Quality Forum for eight years and has had significant involvement on the development of the Scottish quality framework. He was Chair of the UK Quality Strategy Network from 2013-18. He has participated in academic reviews in the UK, France, Poland and Singapore. He is also a long-standing member of the management board of The Burn House, a much-beloved stately home in Angus held in trust as a facility for universities.
