A multi-disciplinary team of enterprise educators from London South Bank University (LSBU) has come together to successfully embed enterprise across the university. The team includes professional service staff, academic Enterprise Champions from LSBU's seven Schools and three student Enterprise Ambassadors.
The team has brought together discipline-specific expertise, extensive external networks and the student voice to develop and deliver an innovative programme of curricular and extra-curricular activities to support students and graduates to develop enterprising skills for employment, and their entrepreneurial ambitions to start businesses.
Work includes:
Supporting colleagues to review and develop new learning materials, to embed enterprise across disciplines
Integrating live projects into learning and teaching at the university, to give students an opportunity to apply their learning in the 'real-world'
Support for student-led activities, including student consultancy, student-led creative agencies and student-facilitated events
Development of a comprehensive extra-curricular offer, including inspirational workshops, events and Intellectual Property education activities, alongside internship, venture creation programmes and competitions.
Engagement with external stakeholders to bring industry and inspirational entrepreneurs into the classroom
Impact of work
Since September 2014, Student Enterprise has supported over 18,000 students and graduates to participate in curricular and extra-curricular enterprise activities. The team has enabled a change in the university's approach to enterprise and entrepreneurship education by placing students at the centre of a vibrant on-campus enterprise ecosystem, where local SMEs and entrepreneurs are engaged in learning and teaching through live briefs, guest lectures and contributing to curriculum development.
The team has successfully embedded enterprise across the institution, with almost 100 curriculum activities being delivered annually across all seven of LSBU's Schools.
The team has impacted on student outcomes, with increased numbers of students starting businesses on graduation and feedback surveys demonstrating increased confidence in displaying enterprise skills. The impact also stretches beyond LSBU, with students sharing their expertise and skills to support micro-businesses through student consultancy activities and a creative agency to support student freelancers, the South Bank Collective CIC.
Plans for the future
The team will continue to engage and support staff and students from across the LSBU community to increase the reach of enterprise and entrepreneurship education.
