A code of Governance that’s fit for the future

Abstract Session - Amanda Oliver

The CUC Higher Education Code of Governance sets out the hallmarks of good governance practice and leadership in the higher education sector. The Code is subject to review every four years. The review provides a level of scrutiny and challenge which tests whether the Code still meets its intended purpose and provides a secure framework for higher education providers (HEPs) to meet current and future governance challenges.

The current review comes at a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty in the higher education landscape. Discussions around Brexit, funding pressures, regulation, public perceptions of the value of HE and, the narrative around the need for a market-orientated system are occupying an increasing amount of time on the agendas of governing bodies, considering the risks and opportunities these bring.  At the same time, there is a clear need to provide assurance to external stakeholders that HEPs are well governed.

With the spotlight firmly on effective stewardship by Boards of Governors it is extremely important that the future Code addresses the challenges of governance in a range of different settings.

This session provides a progress update on the Code review and explores some of the insights and feedback from stakeholders, which are shaping the development of a new Code.

The Governance Conference will take place on 28 November 2019 in London. Find out more.
