Grade Point Average (GPA)

Advance HE is facilitating a national discussion and pilot of an alternative, or complementary, system to the honours degree classification system in UK HE – a Grade Point Average (GPA) system.

This discussion builds on the previous work of the Burgess Implementation Steering Group, a recent development by a group of UK universities looking at the potential use of a GPA scale, and scoping activity carried out by the HEA.

The GPA programme of work aims to:

  • explore the potential use of a GPA model in a range of institutional contexts by carrying out a GPA pilot involving 21 UK HE organisations
  • raise awareness and enhance sector understanding of the issues relating to using GPA as a measure of student achievement

National GPA Advisory Group

The GPA Advisory Group, chaired by Professor Sir Robert Burgess, was set up to ensure the input of senior representatives of stakeholder groups from across the UK HE sector, including students, institutions, employer bodies and other agencies.

GPA pilot 2013-14

Through a series of HEA-facilitated meetings, a diverse group of 21 HE organisations are being supported to explore and test the possible use of a pilot GPA scale within their own context. GPA pilot 2013-14 providers can be viewed here.
