Project Title: Making Sense of Generative AI at the University of Westminster

The project is: In progress

Project Summary:

This ongoing project aims to thoroughly investigate students' perspectives on the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in higher education. The project examines how students wish to utilise Generative AI technologies in their learning through focus groups, surveys, and interviews with undergraduate and postgraduate students across various academic disciplines. It seeks to uncover sources of apprehension students may have about Generative AI, including fears of plagiarism accusations, losing creative control over their work, and how and why their tutors may use it in teaching.

The project's researchers, including current students and recent graduates, will analyse qualitative and quantitative data to shape recommendations for sensible and responsible AI integration that upholds academic integrity while allowing students to benefit from emergent technologies. They hope to support continuous dialogue around AI in education by publishing their findings regularly to advise the university community on formulating equitable policies, best practices, and guidelines for the ethical use of generative AI in both learning and teaching. The project aims to provide a platform for the student voice to shape their AI-integrated education to enhance outcomes while proactively addressing challenges.

Impact: To advise the university community on formulating equitable policies, best practices, and guidelines for the ethical use of generative AI in both learning and teaching.

Audience: The project aims to provide a platform for the student voice to shape their AI-integrated education to enhance outcomes while proactively addressing challenges.

This output is part of a member project - AI Garage: Creating the Future Now which collects and curates cutting-edge practice examples of AI. You can explore other submissions here.
