AI Garage - Shaping the Future of Education: Assessing the Role of ChatGPT in Transforming Undergraduate Learning and Assessment Practices

Shaping the Future of Education: Assessing the Role of ChatGPT in Transforming Undergraduate Learning and Assessment Practices

Lead institution: Edge Hill University

Country: United Kingdom

Project primary contact: Linda Marron (marronl@edgehill.ac.uk), Senior Lecturer in Learning & Teaching Development & Programme Leader for PGCTHE

Project Title: Shaping the Future of Education: Assessing the Role of ChatGPT in Transforming Undergraduate Learning and Assessment Practices

The project is: about to start

Project Summary:

Phase 1 - Evaluating AI Assignment Outputs: Staff members across various disciplines at the university will interact with ChatGPT Plus by inputting one of their assignment titles into the AI system. The generated assignments will be independently evaluated by a colleague from the same subject area to ascertain if the assignment produced would pass, and if so, to what extent (what grade would it achieve).

This process will be replicated for levels 4, 5, and 6 across various disciplines across the institution.

Phase 2 - Exploring Prompt Engineering and Potential Benefits: In this phase, participants will work with an initial AI-generated output, applying various prompts to enhance its quality. Once completed, participants will answer a short questionnaire. The questionnaire will be designed to capture colleagues' experiences regarding the ease or challenges of producing a high-quality assignment using AI technology. The questionnaire will also gauge colleagues' perceived level of subject knowledge required to generate a high-quality output. Finally, the questionnaire will collate colleagues' views on the potential benefits of this technology for developing students' own assessment literacy.

Impact: To allay academic concerns of cheating whilst simultaneously exploring the benefits of ChatGPT as a virtual personal assistant for students.

Audience: All stakeholders in HE, but mostly students

This output is part of a member project - AI Garage: Creating the Future Now which collects and curates cutting-edge practice examples of AI. You can explore other submissions here.
