Advancing LGB equality

Improving the experience of lesbian, gay and bisexual staff and students in higher education.

The recommendations in this guidance will help higher education institutions to demonstrate their commitment to lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) equality, become more confident in their interventions, and break down the perception revealed by ECU research that sexual orientation equality isn’t an issue for the higher education sector.

The guidance will help institutions to meet existing and future legislation protecting staff and students from discrimination, and  proactively advance LGB equality.

Contents include:

  • Background to the current legislative framework, including the interface between sexual orientation and religion and belief
  • How to identify and address homophobic behaviour, specifically within student accommodation and clubs and societies
  • Methods of developing and sustaining peer support mechanisms for staff and students
  • Recommendations for monitoring the sexual orientation of staff and students
