augmented reality (AR)

AR layers digital information onto the real world in real time in order to augment or enhance reality whether that is printed material geographic locations or objects.

In short, AR involves using a smart device or a tablet viewers can scan an object and digital information appears. AR can be used to enrich learning and teaching by connecting students to knowledge relevant to their context. For example, Google glass uses an optical head mounted device or "pair of glasses" to capture what you are looking at and provide content about it. The application of these features in medical education enables surgeons to do a web search for latest research without leaving the operating room and live stream their operations for students to watch remotely in real-time. Other uses of AR technology include textbooks which when placed in front of a webcam can produce 3-D images films and sounds. Some universities are already using this technology in their prospectuses.
