Benchmarking and the NSS

A presentation delivered by Jason Leman during the Higher Education Surveys for Enhancement conference 2011.

This discussion of NSS scores includes HEPI student survey and HESA data to explore variation across institutions and subject areas with regard to factors such as class-size UCAS tariff and institution type. The presentation proposes the use of local competitor institutions as the most relevant benchmark for subject areas. It reflects on the dissemination of information around benchmarking within Sheffield Hallam and the apparent efficacy with regard to encouraging enhancement of learning and teaching practice. The presentation concludes that institutional actions and research may be informed by the NSS particularly where used to reinforce known good practice but that correct interpretation is key.
