In field teaching: Assessment lessons from the Himalayas - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

Geog 36661: Understanding the Himalayan Landscape is a 20 credit assessed final year elective Geography module that is delivered entirely in the Indian Himalayas.  Intended learning outcomes of the course included learning specialist field skills but also a host of transferable skills.  The classroom of the spectacular Indian Himalaya provided a unique student experience. Beyond issues of health and safety and risk assessing what many students called a ‘once in a life time experience’ posed significant problems and challenged teacher-learner positionality.  The discussion will share experiences and critically evaluate the course in hope to stimulate other infield taught modules.
