A generic survey instrument for student 'belongingness' and engagement.

A presentation from the Surveys for Enhancement Conference 2013.

Students' sense of 'belongingness' and their engagement in academic study have been identified as key contributors to student success. An instrument that can identify changes over time in students' sense of belonging to their institution and their academic engagement has been developed since there is currently no instrument available that can provide evidence across both subject disciplines and time. This presentation will describe the instrument and its technical characteristics and explain why it differs from available instruments such as the National Survey of Student Engagement which is widely used in the US. Discussion will include the instrument's relationship with enhancement.
