Governing bodies, equality and diversity in Scottish higher education institutions

Equality and diversity is increasingly central to the missions and strategies of higher education institutions (HEIs). As the governing body is ultimately responsible for the institution’s mission and strategy, it is therefore responsible for ensuring that equality and diversity are advanced in support of that mission and strategy.

In light of the enhanced requirements of the Scottish specific equality duties and the introduction of the Code of Good HE Governance, this research sought to find out:

  • How governing bodies satisfy themselves that their institutions are complying with equality law and making progress on equality
  • What are the challenges of, and current practice in, increasing the diversity of governing bodies
  • What further guidance would be welcomed, from ECU or elsewhere

This research report includes all findings and recommendations from the research as well as examples of good practice.
