Hearing the student voice - students as partners project

A presentation from the STEM Annual Conference 2014.

We are entering an interesting and uncertain new education arena. Effective and efficient communication is important to ensure we are communicating effectively and efficiently with students and indeed vice versa. Good and effective communication is a key factor in improving the student experience and success.

The authors together with two undergraduates who were able to offer their expertise carried out an audit to ascertain how successful the student voice could be heard. This came about following concerns expressed by staff about whether students actually receive messages and concerns expressed by students about what happens to suggestions they make or issues they raise.

The aim of the audit was to consider current practice regarding communication and gauge appropriateness usage and effectiveness. The initially informal trawl of current practice culminated in a formal e-questionnaire to the student body focus groups and feedback from a staff away day to gauge both student and staff perspectives.

This presentation is therefore twofold; to update the audience on the results of the audit which informed future practice and to consider the experience of the two student participants.
