Increasing engagement and results with flipped learning - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

Today’s students have grown up in a world where information is at their fingertips available with ever increasing speed and ease but with no requirement to remember the facts or to assimilate them. The internet offers a gateway to immediate information and a media rich experience. The traditionally accepted method of teaching is through lectures. However feedback from a 2015/16 survey showed that students find lectures ‘boring’. This project looks at the effect of flipped learning by replacing the lecture with discussion and exercises. A further comparison is made between two different methods of pre-session preparation; notes or video.
