Background
LaSalle College of the Arts is a leading higher education institution based in Singapore that specialises in contemporary arts and design education and practice. The college offers 30 undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in art, design, film, animation, fashion, dance, music, theatre, arts management, arts education, art therapy and art history. Its faculty is led by a community of award-winning artists designers educators and researchers and their practice-led research sets LaSalle apart as an international centre of excellence.
The Brief
LaSalle had recently introduced a new strategic plan for learning and teaching in order to accelerate their staff’s professional development. To meet their objectives the college asked the HEA to develop a programme where their staff could develop innovative teaching practice.
Our approach
The process took six months from conception to the delivery. Meetings were held fortnightly to gain an understanding of the requirements of the Vice President and Provost at LaSalle. The HEA proposed a two day programme tailored to these requirements and worked in collaboration with LaSalle to deliver a programme to foster innovation and creativity informing new ways of teaching conducting assessment and offering feedback.
Lectures
Learning teaching and storytelling:
- How story can be used to enrich learning and teaching – particularly as a tool for reflection.
The Academic as Hybrid – Crossing the lines
- An introduction to basic theories of learning and teaching and the idea of the teacher as (invisible) translator.
Digital practice in the arts
- Exploring what is at stake for the future of universities in the age of Open Education.
Critical Digital Pedagogy
- How to become better users of technology by thinking critically and to ensure that we should always experiment with and not on our students.
Workshops
Interdisciplinary practice:
- Using tools of textual and visual analysis participants will be encouraged to open up a creative space where new territories can be explored.
Emergent outcomes:
- To explore new ways to approach goal-setting scaffolding outcomes and assessment-design.
Risk-taking:
- How do we as academics and practitioners find our purpose value and relevance within 21st century higher education.
