Listening & Learning: Student & Staff Perceptions of Oral Assessment in American Studies

In 1997 the American Studies department at Liverpool Hope University College introduced oral assessment for seminar participation. While it is accepted that this form of assessment has improved student participation the formulation of appropriate assessment criteria has remained controversial. The Listening and Learning project used the Ideal *** Inventory (Norton 2001) to measure student and staff perceptions of appropriate oral assessment criteria with a view to modifying and improving future practice.
